University Heights Charter School
University Heights Charter School (UHCS) opened in September 2006 with 60 students in grades K-2 under the sponsorship of Bethany Baptist Church. It has since grown to 625 students in grades PreK-8. The school's mission is to develop within each student the character, scholarship, and leadership necessary for success in life, college, and community. The school is guided by their "REACH" core virtues:
Respect • Excellence • Accountability • Caring • Honesty
UHCS is housed in a two-building campus. The Lower School, serving 300 students in grades PreK-2, is located at 74 Hartford Street and is housed in a two-story building adjacent to Bethany, with over 22,000 square feet of interior space that formerly served as a pre-school. The Upper School, serving 325 students in grades 3-8, is located across the street at 66-78 Morris Avenue in a 33,000 square foot facility including new construction and renovation of a former button factory.
School leadership includes an executive director, school business administrator, and two principals, one for each school (Lower and Upper). They are supported by a Director of Technology & Operations, Vice Principal, Supervisor, and Director of Special and Co-Curricular Instruction.
Across both buildings, UHCS employs 42 full-time general education teachers and 17 full-time instructional aides. Instructional staff also includes 6 special education teachers, 3 arts teachers (visual, music, and theater), 2 physical education teachers, and a technology teacher.
The home office includes an Accountant, HR Coordinator, Business Office Assistant, Special Education Coordinator, and High School Placement Coordinator. Each building has its own office manager, office associate, operations coordinator, nurse, social worker, Dean of Students, cafeteria workers, and custodians. The school also partners with a mental health agency that has 2 full-time specialists on-site.
