Holy Week Schedule
  • Sunday, April 13th - The Blessing of the Palms at both services
  • Tuesday, April 15th - The screening of A Lesson Before Dying, a film about human hope’s emerging in a desperate situation. Begins at 6:00 pm
  • Wednesday, April 16th - Holy Week observance at the Noon service
  • Thursday, April 17th: The Seder Meal - celebrated in accordance with the African American experience of slavery and freedom, beginning at 6:00 pm
  • Good Friday, April 18th: The Stations of the Cross - a ritual commemorating the suffering or the Passion of Christ---the final period in the life of Jesus covering his visit to Jerusalem and leading to his execution by crucifixion. 12:00 noon.
  • Sunday, April 19th: Easter - Sunrise worship at 6:30 am with breakfast served at 7:30 am
  • Easter Sunday Worship at 10:00 am, inclusive of the Easter Pageant presented by the Sunday School
  • Easter Egg Hunt, immediately following the 10:00 am worship service on Easter Sunday.

Easter Pageant Rehearsal - It's not too late to join in!

The Sunday School Teachers invite all learners – preschool through adult level – to participate in the Easter Pageant.  If you would like to play a role in the pageant, please make plans to attend the final two rehearsals at the church on Thursday, April 17th from 4pm-6pm and Saturday, April 19th from 10am til Noon. For further information, please contact Sister Marjorie Crawford or Sister Gail Maynor, or call the church office for additional assistance.

April is Organ Tissue Donor Awareness Month

Diseases of the kidney, heart, lungs, pancreas and liver are found more frequently in racial and ethnic minority populations.  Almost 35% of the more than 95,000 waiting for transplants are African-American.  We have a high need for transplants. Consider being a donor!

Literacy Tutors Training

The Literacy Volunteers of Bethany is announcing a new tutor training session beginning in April. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming an adult literacy tutor, training will begin with an orientation session on Saturday, April 5th from 9am to noon. Training will continue with Session 2 on Saturday, April 12th from 9am-3pm and Session 3 on Saturday, April 26th from 9am-3pm. A $40 registration and materials fee is due at the orientation. Applications can be picked up from the Church Office, the Church Clerk's Office, the Sound Room or they can be downloaded from this website. NOTE – Sections 1-3 of the application are now required from GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS as well!

Black College Choir
Concert Series
Monday, May 12th
7:00 pm

You are cordially invited to come experience the beautiful voices of the Winston-Salem State University Choir in the Sanctuary of Bethany on Monday, May 12th at 7pm. Consider subscribing to our Black College Concert series and attend as a Sponsor, Patron or Booster.  Your name will be listed in our concert program as one who has helped to support this effort.  There will be a special category of support known as the Inner Circle for those who make a special contribution of $50 (individual) or $80 (couples). Inner Circle members will have priority seating in the Sanctuary.  Other subscription costs are as follows:

  • Booster - $2
  • Patron - $5
  • Sponsor - $25
  • Make checks payable to Bethany Baptist Church and stop by the table outside the Seminar Room after the 8 and 11am services; or call the church office for other arrangements.

    Civil Rights History Tour - May 21-27, 2014

    Civil Rights History Tour:
    "Lest We Forget"
    May 23 - June 1, 2014

    • Washington DC
    • Baltimore, MD
    • Richmond, VA
    • Raleigh, Greensboro and Charlotte, NC
    • Charleston and Beaufort, SC and the Gullah Festival, which celebrates a unique cultural heritage within the US. The Gullah, composed of former slaves, have a traditional language that is a blending of French, English and African languages, making it a distinctive dialect of its own.
    • Savannah, GA, where we will visit and worship at the First African Baptist Church, the oldest surviving Black Baptist congregation in North America. 
    • Atlanta and Albany, GA and the Cypress Pond Plantation, once the property of the largest slaveholder in Georgia. Now owned by the New Communities farm collective, headed by Charles and Shirley Sherrod, this 1,638 acre plantation will be the site of a gracious dinner for the travelers, hosted by the Sherrods, which is sure to please both the palates and historical senses.
    • Tuskegee, Montgomery, Selma and Birmingham, AL, home to the Civil Rights Institute and the 16th Street Baptist Church, where “Four Little Girls” lost their lives to racist bombings.

    Entrance fees to all museums and churches on the tour are included in the price. Space is limited, so contact the Church office, Sister Linda Epps or any member of the Book Club to express your interest in this tour. Provide your name, phone number and email address in order to receive further information.

    Mass Choir Spring Concert

    The Bethany Mass Choir under the direction of Ms. Lillian Whitaker presents their annual Spring Concert on May 25th at 3:30pm.  Please support the choir and the concert by purchasing an ad for the special concert program, or by becoming an official supporter.  Prices are as follows:

    Documentary Film Screening
    Friday, May 30th

    No one is immune to trouble, but no one has to remain a victim. Join the Bethany Lecture Committee and Health Ministry for a screening of the documentary film "Woman Under Construction" on Friday, May 30th at 6:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. In a quest to restore promise to her life, Cassaundra sheds the baggage of a decade of addiction, fixes the relationships damaged along the way, and shares her journey through a life-altering medical crisis.  She is an example that through Faith, Acceptance and Honest self- examination, you can overcome the forces of addiction – she’s A Woman Under Construction.  Please look for the RSVP tear-off in Sunday’s bulletin or call the church office to reserve your seat.

    BCI's 12th Annual Golf Classic
    Monday, July 21st

    Bethany Cares Inc.’s (BCI) 12th annual Golf Classic fundraiser will be held on Monday, July 21st.  BCI is Bethany’s principal means of engagement with the Newark community on matters of social service, youth development and education.  It supports an adult literacy program, an afterschool program and the Freedom School, which is the ONLY summer enrichment literacy camp in the city of Newark!  The BCI Board would like to solicit your help in identifying sponsorships from individuals, organizations and corporations.  Sponsorships are essential to meet the event’s fundraising goal.  Please contact Sister Tulani Thomas: tulani@tutusgreenworld.com or Deacon Richard Roper: rw.roper4@verizon.net for more information or to provide referrals. 

    After School Tutoring

    3:30 - 5:30 pm

    The Bethany/SCEEP tutoring program is looking for additional volunteers to tutor children at the Belmont Runyon School here in Newark on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30pm.  If interested, please contact the church with your information and one of the SCEEP leaders (Marilyn Miller or Elmira Yancey) will get you involved.

    Bethany's Junior Missionary Welcome You

    Calling all Elementary, Middle and High School Students!  Come join our ministry!  Our mission is to make a difference in our communities through service, evangelization and personalized attention to the needs of others.  We strive to grow in our personal relationship with Jesus Christ, encountering His love and bringing that love to others.  For more details, seek out Sis.     Jazz at BethanyJazz Vespers
    1st Saturdays @ 6:00pm

    Join us for another spectacular season of worshipping the Lord to the beautiful sounds of Jazz!  Jazz Vespers are held at Bethany every 1st Saturday at 6pm in the Sanctuary from October to June. Come out for a free Saturday night filled with fellowship and music – come as you are, enjoy a lineup of great musicians, and hear the word of God!  This season’s lineup starts off with a birthday bash with the talented Junior Mance on October 5th.  We will celebrate his birthday “With a Lotta Help From His Friends” with a special reception to follow his performance in the Sanctuary.  Then, mark your calendars each month so that you don’t miss the rest of these fabulous musicians:

  • The Mid-Week Filling Station - Noon Day Service
    Every Wednesday 12:00 noon

    Come and join us in the Chapel with praises of songs, scripture, homily and testimonies. Prayers are offered for those in need, including the sick & shut-in. You will hear interesting stories about life experiences shared by all. Come once, and you will become a regular!
